Segesta: An Unfinished Masterpiece in Sicily

Hello! 🙂

Another beautiful destination during our trip in Sicily was visiting the Temple of Segesta!

This impressive masterpiece is located on a hilltop overlooking a beautiful valley. More specifically it is located in the archaeological park of Calatafimi-Segesta, (in the province of Trapani) Sicily!

This unfinished Doric temple is a testament to the skill and ambition of the ancient Elymians.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Segesta is during the spring or fall when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.

However, it was not that bad at all visititing Segesta in June! We managed well to enjoy our day trip! We have prepared ourselves in time 🙂 !

What to Wear

Make sure to wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen (depending on the season…) and wear a hat (especially if you are visiting in the summery period), as there is little shade at the location. And if you’re visiting in the summer, bring lots of water to stay hydrated!

A Brief History

The Temple of Segesta was built in the 5th century BC, during a time of great prosperity for the city of Segesta. However, construction was interrupted in 409 BC when Segesta was defeated by its rival city, Selinunte. The temple was never completed, but it remains one of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world.

What to See and Do

The Temple of Segesta is the main attraction in the area, but there are other ruins to explore as well! These include the remains of the ancient city of Segesta, a theater, and a necropolis.

Tips for Visiting:
  • Buy your tickets online in advance to save time.
  • If you happen to forget water…there is a small café at the site where you can buy snacks and drinks.
  • Restrooms are located near the entrance on the spot.
Why Visit Segesta?

The Temple of Segesta is a must-see for anyone interested in ancient history or architecture or in general for someone who enjoys a bit of culture and seeing new things! It’s a truly breathtaking sight, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sicily.

I really loved it! 🙂 So beautiful and magnificent!

We visited the area for like three hours, for sure!
Here are some additional things to keep in mind when you are planning your visit to Segesta:
  • The temple is located about 60 kilometers from Palermo. The drive takes about an hour.
  • There is a parking lot and a ticket office.
  • Guided tours of the site are available in English, Italian, and other languages.

I hope this blog post has inspired you to visit the Temple of Segesta. It’s a truly unique and unforgettable place.

Additional Tips:

  • For a more complete experience, consider staying overnight in Segesta. There are a few hotels and bed and breakfasts in the town.
  • Be sure to try the local food while you’re in Segesta. Sicilian cuisine is known for its fresh seafood, pasta dishes, and desserts.

See you! 🙂
