The island of Gotland (Sweden)

The island of Gotland (Sweden)

Hey everyone! In this travel article I write about the island of Gotland, which is part of the Swedish country!

I had a really good time with my family in Gotland this August! 🙂 Besides from staying in Visby, we made day excursions around Gotland!

I was there with my family, this year, in the middle of August and it was so nice, peaceful to visit Gotland during low season :)!

Fårö

The first day tour we went to the island of Fårö, which is part of Gotland and it’s located Northeast of the big island! The island is visited every year by many tourists.

We took a ferryboat to Fårö and we drove by car around this stunning island!

We made several stops including admiring Rauks, visiting the Helgumannen Fishing Village and eating delicious vegetarian food at the restaurant Fårögården!

  • Rauks

I was completely in awe when I saw these natural pieces of art, it was for me a real surprise 🙂

Rauks are truly remarkable natural formations. Rauks are tall, (slender) columns of limestone rock that have been shaped by the relentless forces of nature over thousands of years!

I saw two marvellous Rauk locations!

Langhammars Raukarea is a beautiful location for Rauk viewing

Langhammars nature reserve is a renowned place for seeing Rauks! Many of these Rauks are quite tall and impressive!

“Langhammarsgubben” (The Old Man of Langhammars) is a famous Rauk within the Reserve, known for its distinctive human-like shape.

The area is characterized by pebble beaches, providing a picturesque setting for admiring the Rauks.

The Rauks on Fårö have all different kind of shapes, and sizes, creating a special amazing inspiring landscape!

Gamla Hamn is another stunning nature reserve Rauk area!

Gamla Hamn (“Old Harbour”) features the famous rauk called the Coffee Pot (The “Kaffee Pannan” also called “Hunden”), its distinctive shape resembling a dog or a coffee pot, makes it a must-visit for visitors! By the way this rauk is one of my favourite ones 🙂 so artistic and stunning in my opinion and located in a lovely scenery!

During Middle-Age, Gamla Hamn was an harbour for trade and fishing. Nowadays, on the pebble beach there are ancient remains and tombs probably dating back the Viking era!

Besides from the “Kaffepannan”, the reserve boasts a variety of other fascinating Rauks, each with its own history and form.

Moreover the coastal scenery provides a a breathtaking backdrop for the Rauks.

  • Helgumannen Fishing Village (Helgumannen Fiskeläge)

Helgumannen was an important center for herring fishing in the past. Today, the village features 15 well-preserved fishing huts, offering a glimpse into the past. Two of the houses are built in a prehistoric tradition.

The fishing huts have a distinctive architectural style with steeply pitched roofs and simple construction.

The village is situated on a beautiful pebble beach. Boats and fishing gear are still there.

Nowadays, it is among the most photographed places on Gotland.

Ekstakusten

The following day we drove along Ekstakusten (Eksta Coast). The Eksta Coast nature reserve exstends from Djupvik to Hammarudden. The two beautiful fishing villages Djupvik and Kronvall are both part of this area!

Djupvik Fishing Village

The village is nestled in a charming bay. It is characterized by well-preserved fishing huts. Djupvik has a long history of fishing and the village still retains its authentic character.

I really love the photo that I took (right down below), the aesthetic of it gives me such a calming, peaceful mood and vibe!

In one of these (fishing) huts, (as you can see from the second photo down below) we bought a stunning handmade tea mug :)! The atmosphere inside of it (which is now a shop) is so welcoming, warm and beautiful!

It offers stunning views of the Baltic Sea!

Etelhem’s Pottery (Etelhems Krukmakeri) Etelhem Village

One of our last stops during this beautiful excursion around the island, was visiting Etelhem’s Pottery, located in the village of Etelhem. It’s one of the oldest, continuously operating potteries here on Gotland, with a rich history behind.

Ethelhem has its own unique style, featuring hand-painted decorative items and unique art pieces! We bought also there lovely mugs 🙂

My stay on this marvellous Island was really an enriched, beautiful experience!

I would warmly recommend you, (if you have also possibilities…) to see this Island with your own eyes, at least once in your life 😉
