The importance of rest

The importance of rest

Hey guys, and Happy New Year! 🙂 🥰✨

In this wellness blog post, I talk about the importance of rest and some of my life stories.

Pay attention: if you are going through tough times in your life for various reasons do not feel the need to read this article. I write about some of my personal, trying times however, this article could be also helpful for you, if you also find it hard to take time for yourself. So, it’s totally up to you! ❤️❤️

Struggling to find time to rest

I begin this topic with some of my personal events, which happened when I was going in high-school, so I was 14-15 years old.

  • Already as a young age, I had strong difficulties in several parts of the academic area, in fact I was diagnosed with specific learning disorders. When I began high-school (my decision as it was a school focused on languages) the academic pressure became too high and difficult for my standards. I told myself to be good enough in many of the school subjects and I ended up sitting all afternoons and sometimes evenings, just doing homeworks.
  • Several times, my previous therapist and my mom would encourage me over and over to stop studying. My mom would teel me: “Sofy, stop studying now, it’s too late and you have already studied too much this weekend. Close your books and go and rest, please!”
  • I spent many, many weekends on school books, studying, doing homework exercises and that was it. I hardly went outside for some leisure time, I didn’t do any particular sport, I even ate fast many times (or I had no enthusiasm for conversations during meals) so I could begin earlier working. What mattered to me, was to absolutely finishing all my homeworks in time (which were many times a lot).

I link my article about perfection does not exist because these two themes co-exist, I wanted to do everything perfect and so rest was hardly an option for me: https://wordpress.com/post/feelinggoodwithsofy.wordpress.com/1130

Burned out and Emotional Unstable

Sitting hours doing, completing homework tasks all days, came with consequences. Besides from having difficulties in accomplishing homeworks, tests, my high sensitivity didn’t do anything better. Whenever I received a bad mark I struggled not to cry at school, at home after studying for hours I would end up crying for being so exhausted, not feeling good enough and for other personal reasons.

Some thoughts…

When I think now, about how I struggled to take care of myself, at the beginning of high-school, it’s that I didn’t have a life, it was just about school, and homeworks. I really felt I was not good enough, some professors were not encouraging and that practically made me feel so bad as if I wasn’t doing enough.

Also now, I have to admit that I happen to overwork. It’s not easy when you are commited to your work, you love what you are doing, but I’m trying, also with the help of my therapist, to rest up properly after creating a video, writing an article (for ex.). Then also to be more aware of how much I work. it’s challenging but I’m working on it, I am in fact a work in progress 🙂

Some tips for taking care of yourself:

  • Become aware of your work time: I think that first of all, it’s essential to know and become mindfully aware on how many hours a day, you spend working.
  • Schedule your time: write down on your diary, to do list what exactly you have or want to accomplish the next day. Example: I work a lot with social medias, so it’s important for me to be specific about what I will do the following day. There are days when I focus on my blog, others when I’m creating and editing videos…
  • Make sure to have moments of relax: moments of leisure are crucial for your mental wellbeing. These moments could be from taking a walk in nature to take up a hobby, or drinking your tea without watching your mobile phone and etc.
  • See a therapist: sometimes when you work too much it’s a sign that you are not emotionally well. For ex. you are trying to avoid seeing certain people for an aperitivo, so you say that you have too much work that it’s still to be done for the next day, or you are not feeling that you are doing your best at work…A psychologist could help you through difficult times.

Less is More 🙂

I conclude this article with this powerful affirmation, less is more! It’s better to do a fine, specific job, task, where you are mindful in what you are doing, and conclude it and do a little bit less, than doing a lot, perhaps making more mistakes than usual at the end, and feeling drained.
