Depression Motivation❤️

Hello everyone😊, and welcome back to Feeling Good with Sofy!❤️❤️

In this mental-health blog post, I write about depression, a bit of my story regarding this topic and helpful tools along the way❤️

Trigger warning: this blog post might be difficult for you to read especially if you are someone who is struggling with your own mental-health issues or other personal problems. However, this article contains also motivational content and tips for managing depression. So, it’s totally up to you, and to no one else!❤️❤️

Depression is not a choice

First of all, it’s crucial to acknowledge and remember that depression is not a choice.

Depression is a complex medical condition that can be influenced by a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. In some cases, it might be primarily triggered by external, environmental factors, while in others genetic predispositions could play a more dominant role.

In my case, my depression has been influenced by external, environmental factors.

Depression is a real battle, and not something to take easy.

Even though there are different levels of depression, from mild to serious, it’s important from the beginning to have support, as early intervention can significantly improve long-term outcomes and prevent symptoms from worsening.

My story❤️

I’ve been battling depression for over a decade, at first it was mild but through the years it became more and more like a serious struggle.

Since a very young age I began to feel not okay. School and social interactions have played a vital role to my inner suffering.

When I began school, “a big, black wall fell opun me”, and I began to feel empty, not good with my own self and I was crying constantly.

Part of my struggles were caused by my difficulty in the academical area, in fact I was diagnosed with specific learning disorders during the following years. Moreover being highly sensitive since kindergarten, not being understood at all by some teachers, and being humiliated in front of classmates when I was not able to accomplish tasks at the blackboard made me feel really bad…Much of this added to my uneasiness.

Yes, I had days (in primary school) when I was quite happy but it was a temporary thing. I felt happy and safe when I was at my grandparent’s house in Sweden, for example, but when it was time to go back to school and other activities in Italy, I got in a low mood again.

Feeling lonely

Throughout the years, I felt no one had truly understood me both academically and in social contexts.

Struggling from a very young age didn’t make things easier, I was terrified to speak up, to tell to my first therapist and to my parents that I, for example, had issues with some teachers, that I felt so sad.

Crying was my main way to express my emotions in elementary school and it remained so later on, even to this day.

Slowly, I am learning with time to ask for help when I am in need, it’s a journey consisting mainly of small steps and that is okay, things take time, healing takes time❤️

Helpful tips along the way…❤️

  • Confide in someone you trust: I think the very first step to take is telling someone you trust how you feel, especially if you are a minor and do not know exactly how to reach professional help.
  • Therapy: going to therapy is another crutial step. It could be difficult to find the right psychologist for you who truly understands you, but do not give up, and give it time❤️For me therapy is a very good support, my current therapist helps me to navigate through the highs and lows and she understands me❤️
  • Proper communication: real communication is another key word for better understanding. When I was younger, I did not get the right help and it became harder to communicate with family…
  • Mindfulness: a few years ago, when I was deeply depressed, mindfulness became slowly my anchor❤️to keep on going and not give up. Mindfulness involves being present, in the here and now. Mindfulness is truly something to cultivate through time. With consistency, self-discipline, and external help, you can start living a more mindful life.

For now, I have also written two articles related to ways to manage depression, here are the links:

If you think you have depression, please reach out to someone you trust and do not hesitate to ask for help. Remember, asking for help is never a sign of failure, but a sign of strength and resilience! You are strong!❤️❤️
