Hi everyone! Welcome back to a new blog post all about mental-health awareness, receiving help, and self-care. ❤️❤️
Trigger warning: if you struggle with your mental health or going through a difficult period of your life, this article could be difficult to read. However, this blog post also offers motivational insights and tips along the way! The decision to keep reading is entirely yours. ❤️❤️
Raising Awareness
Mental-health has become an increasingly important topic to discuss, and I truly believe in the power of words to express its significance.
As more people feel the effects of mental health struggles, seeking professional help has become more normal, and there should be absolutely no shame in it.
In fact, there should be no shame in discussing these topics. Raising awareness is crucial for helping us better understand those who live with or struggle daily with mental-health. It also incourages people to seek help and support when they need it, rather then feeling they have something to hide.
Sharing a bit of my story…❤️
Frightened to speak up…
I have struggled with my mental-health practically all my life. In the past, there was a big part of my life where I didn’t speak up. This was partly because I was so young, but it was also due to shame, uneasiness, fear and guilt.
I thought I was protecting myself by not being truly honest. As a young kid and adult, I was too frightened to hurt the people I love by sharing my sad, difficult thoughts and emotions with them.
I went to a psychologist for the first time when I was ten years old. However, I wasn’t comfortable with the experience, and she didn’t make me feel at ease. I ended up telling her everything except the real truth.
Struggling…
As time went by, my pain didn’t cease; it just grew stronger and stronger. In my early teens and into adulthood, I started having panic attacks, and mental breakdowns. My previous therapist didn’t truly understand my pain, and while my parents were concerned about my mental distress (they contacted a psychiatrist..) they didn’t know how to take proper action. They didn’t have the right guidance. I was also not truly open with them.
Receiving proper help
After i finished school, I started seeing another therapist, who is really professional and truly understands me and always tries her best to help me through the highs and lows in my life. Together with another professional, she also helped and continues to help my parents understand and help me better.
I learned through time with the help of my therapist that telling the truth is the main key to get real help and also communication is utterly important to understand each other better.❤️
Your Mental-Health Is As Important As Your Physical Health❤️
It is absolutely crucial to prioritize your mental health just as you would your physical health. You not only deserve, but have every right to receive help and support if you are struggling.
I know it can be hard to find the right help, but do not give up! If you are under 18 or a young adult, I would suggest you talking first to some one you trust, maybe a family member, so that you can then receive more professional help.
An important reminder: No matter how much you are struggling, please do not repress your difficult thoughts, emotions, because in one way or another they will come back to the surface, and can cause even more harm to your wellbeing.
The Practice of Self-Care❤️
Another thing which is super important to do, even if you don’t struggle with mental health, is the practice of self-care.❤️
If it’s helpful, ask your therapist for some guidance also when it comes to self-care. I, for example, like to journal where I write what I am grateful for, the good things in my life, my daily struggles, which I also share later with my therapist.
Another thing about self-care and therapy is that your therapist can remind and encourage you to take care of yourself. For instance, a few months ago, I was again really down and found it really hard to move my body. My therapist encouraged me to take up my yoga lessons with my yoga teacher, and I am grateful I did it. It felt good to move my body, of course, with right techniques and movements.❤️
You are not weak when you ask for help; you are courageous each time you speak up! ❤️
And remember, you do not have to deal with your problems alone. We can be strong together; together, we are stronger! 🙂
Much Love and Light❤️✨
Sofia Lena😊
