The Charming, historical city of Bologna!

Hello guys! And welcome back to a new travel article!

Ready for an Italian adventure? This time, we’re exploring one of the most renowned historical cities in Italy—Bologna!

Where is Bologna located?

For a city known as a major transport hub, its location is key! Bologna acts as a crossroads, connecting northern and southern Italy as it is situated in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region. You can easily reach Bologna as it is a short train ride from other major cities like Milan, Florence, and Venice.

Why is Bologna so famous and special?

Bologna is truly a charming city, and having been there myself not so long ago, I can tell you why it is so special and a popular travel destination.

  • First of all, this historical city is home to the oldest University in the Western world, the Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna, founded in 1088. It was pivotal in developing the modern university system as we know it. Nowadays, many students from around the world go to Bologna to study. In fact, it continues to be a top institution for higher education and research, with campuses throughout Italy and a strong reputation on the global academic stage.
  • Beyond its academic fame, Bologna is also defined by a different kind of architectural wonder: its sprawling network of porticoes. These were one of my favourite things to see and admire during my visit! These historic covered walkways, stretching for nearly 40 miles, are more than just a beautiful feature; they are an important symbol for Bologna. Plus, they are a Unesco World Heritage Site! They are a testament to Bologna’s rich history, offering protection from both the summer heat and from the rain!
  • While the porticoes provide a beautiful backdrop for a stroll, they also lead the way to Bologna’s culinary heart. The city is well-known for its delicious tagliatelle al ragù, its prosciutto crudo, lasagna, among many other delights. In bologna, food isn’t just a meal; it’s a way of life! No visit to the city would be complete without trying the local specialities! I had a really good experience enjoying a plate of delicious tagliatelle al ragù at Osteria Sotto Sopra. The pasta was handmade and it just melted in my mouth—definitely a nice experience! 🙂
  • Apart from the fantastic porticoes, Bologna’s most captivating symbol is undoubtedly Le Due Torri, or The Two Towers! This iconic pair of medieval towers has come to define the city’s skyline. The Two Towers are actually two separate structures: the taller Torre degli Asinelli and the shorter, dramatically leaning Torre Garisenda. For a truly stunning panoramic view, you can climb the 498 steps of The Asinelli Tower. Meanwhile, the Garisenda’s significant tilt is even greater than the famous tower of Pisa’s!!

Piazza Maggiore

Now, let’s talk about another important symbol of Bologna: Piazza Maggiore, located in the center of the city. It’s a remarkable place surrounded by important palaces, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Basilica di San Petronio. I was truly in awe when I stepped into this important, historical square. It’s a bit like Piazza Duomo in Milan, but with a unique and distinctly Bolgnese character.

The Square is lined by some of Bologna’s most significant buildings, each with its own story. The grand Palazzo d’Accursio serves as the City Hall, while the nearby Palazzo del Podestà housed the first city’s governement, which was led by the Podestà, along with his judges and officials. Another highlight is the immense Basilica di San Petronio, a Gothic church famous for its unfinished façade, with a striking contrast of marble and brick. At the heart of the Piazza stands the elegant marble fountain of Neptune, known also for the locals as “il Gigante,” and a beautiful example of Renaissance art.

Even today, this square remains the city’s lively heart, hosting events, markets, and locals who gather to meet and socialize.

La Finestrella di Bologna

La Finestrella di Bologna (The Little Window of Bologna) was one of my favourite highlights during my stay. It’s truly one of the city’s hidden gems, and it’s easy to see why! This small window on Via Piella is a unique find, revealing a picturesque view of one of Bologna’s hidden canals. I was completely charmed when I found this spot tucked away in a quiet corner.

My personal experience

It’s been a while since my family and I wanted to explore this city, and I can tell you that I am really glad we finally made it!

Besides what I have already written, this city is filled with many picturesque corners, streets, restaurant, and cafes. As you wander through bologna, you encounter many porticoes, cozy streets with typical foodie spots, and even parks. Just when you think you are at the end of a street, you can arrive to a new charming piazza, with other historical landmarks. In conclusion, Bologna is a city that truly brims with history, art, food experiences and new adventures!

Where to stay

I’m grateful and glad I had the opportunity to stay in Bologna for a day and a half. I lodged at Hotel Centrale located in the city center, and I highly recommend it. The location was perfect for exploring on foot, which was especially convenient after enjoying a delicious dinner and feeling tired. The hotel provided a comfortable and convenient base for our short but memorable stay.

Of course, there are other countless other options to choose from besides our hotel. Bologna offers a wide range of accomodation to suit any budget, from luxory hotels to cozy B&Bs, so you can easily find a place that fits your travel style, and the length of your stay.

Final thoughts

I really think Bologna is one of the places you should visit at least once in your life. This city is a true gem, filled with unforgettable charm, incredible history, and, of course, some of the best food in Italy.
