Hey everyone!😊
Forget all about the overcrowded tourist traps. Quite close to where I live—lies Brivio. This beautiful, picturesque town, located on the Adda river, is a genuine hidden gem, and it’s time to show you around! 🙂
There are some ways to get to Brivio, depending on your preferred mode of transport and your starting point (whether in Milan or elsewhere). One way is by train (even though Brivio doesn’t have its own station), another is by car. I’m sure you’ll find a way to arrive! 🙂

The best part? I enjoy going to Brivio no matter the season. Autumn and winter are made for hot dark chocolates, while spring and summers demand a walk on the river with a perfectly scooped gelato in hand! 😉
Finding Brivio on the Adda River
This lovely small town is nestled along the banks of the Adda river. It’s fascinating to think that this river begins high up in the Italian Alps, specifically in the Val Alpisella, near the town of Livigno in the Rhaetian Alps. Then it flows dramatically through Lake Como, and Brivio is one of the first charming stops it makes on its journey to the Po river.
Brivio’s Medieval Bridge
The centerpiece of Brivio’s river landscape is its historic ‘Old Bridge.’ It’s a magnificent concrete tied-arch structure, designed by Giuseppe Banfi, that crosses the Adda river, connecting the local road network between Bergamo and Lecco. Built between 1912 and 1917, this 132-meter-long bridge is supported by three arches. It is affectionately referred to as the ‘Medieval Bridge,’ a nod to the older, genuine medieval bridge that it likely replaced at this strategically crucial crossing point.

I find that this historic centerpiece fits perfectly in Brivio’s landscapes, providing an endless opportunity for beautiful photography, in fact I always take so many beautiful pictures while I’m there. The drive across the bridge is also a treat, as it offers a unique and picturesque view of the town and riverbanks that you can enjoy from the car.
Brivio’s Best Cafes😍
As you walk along the main streets of Brivio, you’ll encounter cafes seemingly around every corner. And just like in each place, locals and regulars have their favourites—and I’m happy to share mine with you!
I have two favourite cafes and both are situated along the river! The first one is called Tofè Cafè and the other one is called Caffè del Fiume.
Tofè Cafè:
I’ve been a regular here for quite a while, and the reason is simple: it’s perfect year around. The café is uniquely situated within an old tower, giving it a special historical charm right on the riverfront!
Tofè Cafè expertly transitions with the weather, offering a lovely outdoor terrace for enjoying spring, summer days. Meanwhile, the cozy indoor café (See third photo) is my favourite haven during the colder seasons, where I enjoy a relaxing hot dark chocolate in a truly warm atmosphere. During the warmer months, sitting outside with a cup of tea, admiring the gentle flow of the river, and hearing the sounds of nature is truly restorative. Beyond sweet treats and drinks, Tofè Cafè also offers breakfasts, lunches and aperitifs!

Caffè del Fiume
My second favourite, Caffè del Fiume (which is just a short walk from Tofè Cafè), offers a delightful contrast. It is certainly not as large, providing more an intimate space since there are a fewer sits available. However, it boasts a gorgeous location right on the river, and I particularly love its picturesque entrance (as seen in the first photo). While it might require you to pause and see if a table is free, it is truly worth to stop to enjoy a warm drink or a meal. If you manage to get a seat, I would highly recommend you sitting outdoors, with a river view!
Strolling peacefully around Brivio
Whether you have just finished a delicious hot dark chocolate or simply grabbed a delightful gelato at Non Solo Gelato (located right in the center of the town), taking a stroll along the river is a wonderfully peaceful experience especially if you visit during the week.

Parco Adda Nord
First of all, the Parco Adda Nord, or Northern Adda Park, is much more than a local green space; it’s a major regional park in Lombardy dedicated to protecting the Adda River. It officially begins where the Adda exits the lakes of Garlate and Olginate and runs south, safeguarding the river’s environment until the area of Truccazzano.
Within the Parco Adda Nord, you can take two main nature walks starting from Brivio. I usually take the one directing to Imbersago.
I specifically love this walk as it closely hugs the river, (also on the other walk, but here is more beautiful😊) offering immense peace and tranquility. The paths are consistently clear and easy to follow, (except, of course, after heavy rain!😅).The landscape is truly breathtaking, with especially rewarding views at certain points along the way. The presence of many cyclists also confirms that the route is well-maintained and perfect for easy strolling!

Another feature I most love about this walk is a wonderful, picturesque alley (see third photo) located closer to Brivio, just before you get deep into the park. I particularly apprecciate it in the spring, when the plants are in full bloom and create a truly magical canopy!
Beautiful Escape
Whether you seek some tranquility, a delightful hot dark chocolate, or just want to take a beautiful nature walk and visit a lovely picturesque town, this is the place. Moreover, Brivio is a place where history meets nature and where a simple walk along the river becomes a truly unforgettable, beautiful escape.
