LùBar: Milan’s Most Charming Sicilian Escape

Just a short walk from the Duomo di Milano lies LùBar, an outstanding Sicilian destination. Founded in 2013 by three siblings, hailing from Sicily, this gem began as a passionate family project that has evolved over the years into a massive success. Today, this restaurant and café remains a favourite to savour sophisticated Sicilian delights or for just enjoying a cup of tea or coffee in their exclusive bar. The restaurant, located at Via Palestro 16, is consistently fully booked and beloved by locals and travelers alike.

I love going to LùBar whenever I can; it is easily one of my favourite foodie spots in town.

The Setting: An 18th-Century Oasis

The true fascination of this place lies in its setting. The restaurant is, in fact, set within an 18th-century neoclassical greenhouse inside Villa Reale. Built at the end of the 18th century for Count Belgiojoso by an Austrian architecture, the Villa is also home to the Gallery of Modern Art, located just steps away from LùBar.

The Lush, Green Venue

Its fascinating history only adds to the beauty of the venue. The owners have done an excellent job with the interior design and vintage furniture! Of course, no greenhouse would be complete without an abundance of lush greenery, and the beautiful plants decorating the different dining rooms, are a highlight. After all, the heart of the restaurant is a true glasshouse!

Different Dining Spaces

What makes this venue so special is the variety of its dining rooms—each one unique and stunning. They have been decorated with finesse and elegance, boasting a refined aesthetic that seamlessly blends with the history of this place, leaving a lasting impression.

  • Limonaia: This is perhaps one of my absolute favourite rooms. So far, I have only eaten here—and it’s no wonder, as the entire aesthetic is remarkable! As the main room of the venue, it features a neoclassical marble statue encased in glass that fits the environment perfectly. The expansive windows let the natural light in. Having a meal here feels truly chic (at least in my opinion! :).
  • Serra: This is another beautiful dining space, perhaps even cozier as it’s also housed within the greenhouse structure. It overlooks the courtyard of the Villa Reale. The climbing plants and mirrored ceiling work together to create a stunning aesthetic. Next time I visit, I’ll have something to eat here! 🙂
  • Cortile & Giardino: If you want to enjoy your meal outdoors or get some fresh air, the courtyard or the garden is the perfect choice! The Garden is an intimate area surrounded by the nature of Villa Reale’s park, offering a peaceful escape from the city.
  • Bar: the cafeteria area is located in the restaurant’s elegant entrance. Here, you can order a coffee and a croissant to take home or enjoy them at your leisure in one of the dining rooms. Within the same bar space, there is a charming little shop where you can buy souvenirs or gourmet treats from LùBar.

The Delicious, Authentic Food

And now, finally, on to the next best part: the food, of course! 🙂

LùBar offers a Mediterranean cuisine with strong Sicilian influences. The chefs use only fresh, genuine ingredients with a Mediterranean touch, sourced from small, trusted Sicilian suppliers. You can actually see the kitchen on your way to la Limonaia; it’s so nice to catch a glimpse of the chefs at work as they prepare the meals!

The olive oil, almonds, and oranges are cultivated directly by the owners. I have adored their olive oil since my very first visit; I was amazed by its rich flavour! They even sell it as one of the featured products in their small, beautiful shop.

A Taste of the Menu…

There are many exquisite things to try here, such as fresh salads, pasta, seafood, avocado toasts, soups, and desserts! The menu also varies, especially if certain ingredients are not in season.

I especially love their delightful, fresh tuna tartare, artichoke salad, avocado toast, and seafood!

Final Thoughts…

LùBar is truly the right place for food lovers, and its environment makes the dining experience even better. If you are in search of something different that will leave you enthusiastic and amazed, then this place is a must-visit! 🙂

Don’t forget to book your table in advance, as this venue is usually fully booked if you arrive without a reservation. Make your reservation online and have an unforgettable experience! 🙂
