The Fear of Not Making It: Learning to Exist in the Now
Trigger warning: if you’re struggling with your own mental health, there are parts of this blog post that might be difficult to read. However, it also contains motivational insights to help you along the way. The decision to keep reading is entirely yours! ❤️❤️
Introduction…

Many times, fear itself can prevent you from moving on—making you feel stuck or unmotivated and keeping you from moving forward, even when it comes to taking a small step. Behind this worry lies the fear of not making it, which can truly paralyze you and make you believe you aren’t capable. This is a fear, not the reality. Let’s expore this theme together!

Reasons behind that Fear

There are several key reasons why we find ourselves afraid of not making it.

  • First of all, fear often roots itself in anxiety, which can be biological. For some, like me, it’s in our dna. You might be scared from a very young age, and as an adult, that fear naturally follows you—this is neither wrong nor weird. Some simply have this predisposition; you might be more prone to develop anxiety disorders or depression. Struggling with mental health can make you doubt yourself deeply, making it harder to believe in your potential. Yet, even then, you still have what it takes to make it. ❤️
  • Self-esteem also plays a vital role; it helps build an important bridge toward ‘making’ it without so much hesitation. When your self esteem is low, it is more natural to struggle with believing in yourself—and believing that you can take that next step forward. Still, you got this, and you can learn to accept yourself more.❤️
  • Feeling discouraged by past setbacks can be another reason why we fear the future. Just because you didn’t reach your goals before doesn’t mean history is destined to repeat itself. I understand that the path can feel steeper after a fall, but the courage you carry within you is stronger than the fear of failing again! ❤️
  • Battling a physical illness is also frightening and painful. It can leave you feeling as though you aren’t moving forward, or doubting whether things will ever get better. No matter the difficulties that a physical illness brings, don’t give up. The same goes for a mental illness: take it day by day, knowing in your heart how brave you are for continuing to fight. ❤️

A Grounded Perspective

After exploring some reasons behind that fear of not making it, let’s move on to the solutions. To find peace, we must first shift our focus away from a future that hasn’t happened yet and inhabit the life we are living right now, in the present moment. Mindfulness is incredibly important in my life, as it is for so many others.

Being mindful does not only mean knowing I am present; it’s so much more. It’s about learning to be grounded and rooted in one’s being, practicing small daily rituals that keep you stable. This can range from deep breathing exercises to savouring your tea, or perhaps taking a minful nature walk—being aware of your surroundings, noticing details you haven’t seen before, and all the while, feeling your feet rooted on the ground.

The 5-4-3-2-1 technique

This exercise is effective at bringing your attention to the present moment when fear tries to ‘sneak in.’ It involves all five senses. Notice five things you can see, four things you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.

Making Peace With Fear

The truth is that fear will always be present in our lives; we can’t avoid it, no matter how hard we try to deny it. What we can do is choose not to make such a big deal of it. I’m not saying we should never be scared again—fear is a natural human instinct, after all—but we can learn to make peace with it. For example, you might say: “Hey fear, I know you’re here to scare me off, but you know what?! I’ll make it through this challenge anyway!” 🙂 I know it’s not easy at all, but shifting toward a lighter perspective can bring you some peace. ❤️

“You are stronger than fear itself and you will make it, no matter what!”
