Trigger warning: if you find yourself grappling with your own mental health, parts of this article may be difficult to read. However, it also contains motivational insights and tips to help you along the way. The decision to keep reading lies entirely in your hands! ❤️❤️
When you’re surrounded by fog or darkness, it becomes incredibly difficult to find your way out. It’s like having a blindfold over your eyes without truly knowing it. Reaching the light seems impossible, and the motivation to keep going is barely there. I, too, have gone through periods—and still do—where the darkness seems to take over.
Being Blindfolded
There are reasons why you might not see the light at the end of the tunnel; a common one is struggling with a mental health condition, like depression, or perhaps a physical illness. Dealing with an illness is never easy. It often leads a person to question their ability to find the light, especially when so much darkness is surrounding their soul and environment.
When we struggle, the search for light becomes harder—not because we don’t want to find it, but because the illnesses or problems we deal with cause the light to dim and the darkness inside to grow.
A Biological Reality
The brain of someone experiencing depression functions differently than a ‘healthy’ brain. Research shows that several parts of the brain can shrink, making an individual feel as though they are surrounded by darkness with no way out. Of course, there are different levels of pain, but fortunately, help and medication are available, if necessary.
Bits of My Story…❤️
As I mentioned before, darkness has been—and still is—present in my life. During certain difficult periods, I truly thought I would never see the light at the end of the tunnel again. I, too, have felt ‘blindfolded’ by depression. My battle throughout the years has shown how much depression can consume a person; especially over the last couple of years, it has become harder to believe that I could still heal and reclaim that light within once more.
Even though depression likes to ‘make its jokes,’ I’m slowly learning to confront them, even if it can be incredibly hard at times. In those moments, I can find light by listening to a powerful song that makes me remember my strength, or by drinking a comforting cup of tea. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a sunny day to cheer me up; on the contrary, the smallest things can provide a release and a sense of inner peace, depending also on how I’m doing.
Surrounded by Light, Even in the Dark
I know it’s hard to believe there is light waiting for you, especially in your darkest hours. Still, there is a shining light surrounding you, which could be the love of your family, the morning sun entering your room as a sign of hope, a hug from a loved one, the affection of a pet, or the stars shining above. Even when you feel completely alone in this world, there is something out there that gives you at least a modicum of lightness. ❤️✨
Mindfulness and Lightness
Mindfulness is simply the act of coming back to the present moment, which is especially useful when you’re dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. It’s a significant tool for those times when you feel ‘blindfolded’ and can’t seem to escape the darkness.
By practicing mindfulness, we don’t ignore the darkness; instead, it’s a way to focus on the small glimmers that each day gifts you. It’s during these quiet moments that we can learn to embrace the lightness surrounding us, knowing we can find it again by taking a deep breath and staying grounded while we discover what makes us calmer and happier. 🙂
I Feel Light When…
If you find it hard to remember when you feel light, write it in your journal, on post-its, or wherever you want—just so you can remind yourself. 🙂
I feel light when I make and sip on my matcha while I journal in the morning. I feel light when I watch my favourite series with a good cup of tea. I feel light when I bake my favourite oatmeal biscuits. These moments are a sign that I feel lighter and my blindfold is being taken away. They are proof that I can still chase the light even when I feel darkness surrounding me.
It’s your turn now; how and when do you feel light? I hope you find yours as well. ❤️✨
“I can still reclaim the light, even when darkness tries to overshadow it.”
Much Love and Light ❤️✨
Sofia Lena 😊
