Finding the proper equilibrium between self-care, leisure, and work, can be complicated indeed. We often treat work and self-care as two completely different strangers—constantly competing for space so we can feel more at peace and in control. However, that is not the best way to improve our mental wellbeing; instead, it’s about learning how to live wiht more harmony and balance in both areas, especially when it comes to the demands of work.
Why So Many Struggle…
So, why is this equilibrium so hard to grasp? There are, of course, many reasons; high demands at work are a primary example. There may be too many tasks at the office, and the fear that your workload will double the next day if you leave things unfinished often makes you stepping away at all costs.
Another reason stems from the struggle to remain hyper-productive just to avoid being perceived as—or feeling—lazy. This guilt can create a vicious cycle of needing to do more just to feel “enough.” Beyond the office, deeper challenges like illness, mental health struggles, or financial instability can make the space in between impossible to reach.
Whatever the case may be, the struggle is real for many, making it challenging to stop, breathe thoroughly, and find that inner and external balance between taking care of yourself and other duties like school and work. However, you can reclaim your equilibrium, even if it feels difficult; I’ve been there myself during some years of high school.
Searching for Balance
Particularly during my first year of high-school, I did nothing but go to school and study. It was as if I were ‘addicted’ to this cycle: school, homework, and more homework. It did not do me any good; it only brought harm and exhaustion. I hardly took care of myself and had barely any leisure time. I wanted my studies to be perfect because I was struggling, but that pressure only intensified the pain.
What came to my rescue was discovering my passion for modeling at fifteen; something which made things turn around. Because of that, I empathize with you if you are finding it difficult to search for balance in your life. Don’t give up. ❤️You can start anywhere; seeking support from a professional so you also don’t have to carry everything inside is a wonderful first step. Practicing mindfulness and deep breathing is also a great way to stay grounded and anchored in the present moment.
There Is No Right or Wrong
The most important thing to remember is that balance doesn’t have a univeral blueprint. Each and every one of us has their own equilibrium; some need some rest in between work, while others do not. What works for a professional athlete won’t work out the same for a child, or an engineer. There is no wrong way to find peace of mind, as long as it is authentic to you. ❤️
Be patient with yourself; don’t rush to find that peace within, as it could lead to disappointment if you don’t find it straight away. Don’t be judgemental if your ‘space in between’ happens to be a comforting cup of tea while you browse a magazine or a massage session, instead of a night out with friends. We’re all different and unique; remember that. 🙂
Your equilibrium is your personal journey, and it might change each day—especially as you discover the activities and rituals that bring you joy, even on the difficult days.
“Your balance is unique, your balance is sacred, and it is yours to nourish.”
