In today’s society, it is easy to get overwhelmed—especially when faced with high demands coming from within, like: “I should have done this better” or “I’ve trained too little,” alongside pressure from those around us. It’s quite normal to expect a lot of ourselves, but there is a limit to everything. Finding the right balance shouldn’t feel like another heavy burden on your to-do list. Through self-compassion and the right guidance, you can slowly discover a healthy equilibrium. The Swedes call this lagom, and I do too, since I’m half Swedish! It is a philosophy of not too little, not too much—just enough! 🙂
What Exactly Is Lagom?
First things first: there is no direct translation for lagom. The closest meaning is ‘just the right amount’ —not too little and not too much. We Swedes use this term in everyday life, whether choosing a balanced outfit, managing working hours, or planning an upcoming party. This philosophy even shines through in Swedish fashion: effortless, trendy pieces that are stylish, yet wearable and practical for daily life. In Swedish culture, lagom doesn’t mean doing less; it means doing what matters with purpose, presence, and moderation.
The Story Behind Lagom
At its roots, lagom comes from an ancient form of lag, which means ‘law’ or ‘custom’—suggesting something that is naturally suitable or proper. However, a popular Viking legend traces lagom to the expression ‘laget om’ (‘around the team’), referring to passing a drink around so every team member got a fair share. It was practical, mindful, and uniquely Swedish!
Finding Balance When Overwhelmed
When “More” Became Too Much
When you set high expectations for yourself—or feel drowning pressure coming from elsewhere—it becomes all too easy to get burned out, disappointed, or even angry with yourself and others. I also relate to this. A specific period in my life always comes to mind: when I was modeling, I overtrained constantly, believing I needed to do more to get fitter. Paired with not eating enough, it only exhausted me, ultimately leading to burnout and, soon after, severe depression (though other factors were involved as well).
Recovery & Balance
Over time, I realized that this wasn’t how I wanted to treat my body, so I slowly stopped demanding so much from myself—a balance I’m still working on in other areas of my life. To me, lagom represents balance. It inspires me to let go of unrealistically high expectations. When you stay mindful, and self-aware, following this philosophy becomes easier. Remember: lagom should not become a strict rule that drives you crazy; it’s simply a gentle reminder that you’re doing enough. You don’t have to push to extremes to feel proud and satisfied.
Applying Lagom in Daily Life
Adopting a lagom lifestyle can help you balance your emotions, protect you from burnout, and foster a deeper, more lasting sense of wellbeing. You can apply this in everything—whether it is your sleep schedule, your working hours, or how much sugar you put in your tea. Next time you feel overwhelmed or realize you’re overreacting, ask yourself: “Am I pushing myself to the edge?” or “Am I doing too much?” Then take a deep breath, pause and consider the Swedish approach. Sometimes, lagom is the exact balance you need. 🙂
