“I’m depressed, I feel numb, and I am extremely sad; nothing seems to give me a modicum of release. I just want to give up; I’m tired of keeping going when there seems to be no point in doing so.”

The Heavy Feelings of Depression

Depression can become truly paralyzing and difficult to manage. It’s paralyzing because your entire being feels frozen; it is hard to move, as if glue has been placed under your feet. It’s difficult to manage because it’s an invisible illness that you have not chosen to live with. You might struggle to know what’s best for you in those moments when everything seems dark and hopeless. It makes you want to cry all day long; smiling seems like the hardest thing to do, and all motivation to do things is gone.

What Can Depression Look Like?

Besides taking the form of a beast, depression to me is comparable to the Dementors in the world of Harry Potter. J.K.Rowling did an amazing job in creating and describing these dark figures, as their main task is to suck out the victim’s soul, along with their happiness. All that’s left is the victim’s ability to live, but without feelings or any emotion any longer. Dementors are a true representation of depression, which the writer drew from her own experience. You might have another representation of depression in mind, and that’s okay; we all have our own.

Finding Courage From Role Models

I admire J.K. Rowling so much for her incredible strength in not giving up, despite battling clinical depression at the time. Her resilience in following her dreams no matter what, and her motivation to be stronger than all the rejections she received—until one day, a publisher’s daughter fell in love with her writing. She’s absolutely one of my favourite role models! 🙂

In my opinion, having strong role models who you can both rely on and think of when things are tough and uncertain is a good strategy. It serves as a reminder that you can do it, even if the road is still long and complicated. If they made it, why not you? 🙂 You can be inspired, too, when you admire someone! 🙂 Your role model doesn’t have to be someone famous; it can be anyone: your mom, a professor, or your grandpa.❤️

Prioritizing Your Healing

It’s true that depression is an obstacle in your journey; whether it is a small or a large one depends on each unique story. I know that, too, as I’ve been living with this illness for quite some time now—long enough to have realized that it’s not something to joke about. You need treatment when you’re dealing with a physical illness, and the same goes for depression. Don’t wait to ask for help; the more you deny it, the more difficult the consequences can be. You have every right to get the right help, always. ❤️

Depression, Not Your Identity

Even though depression is challenging and painful, please don’t label yourself; doing so can make you feel worse. I tried it—especially with other disorders I have alongside depression—and it didn’t give me any consolation; it just added ‘a load of pain and discomfort.’ You have so much to give, even if you don’t know it yet; depression has its nasty ways to make you lose confidence in yourself. I know it can be difficult to hear this, but you’ll make it! You are a real warrior, no matter what the illness tells you. ❤️

Much Love and Light ❤️✨
