Whether it is a cancelled picnic, a sudden illness on vacation, or a sprained ankle during an afternoon walk, you have every right to feel disappointed and upset when plans fall apart. You might be thrilled to go swimming with your friends in a spot you’ve never visited before, only to find out on the weather forecast that it’s going to pour rain on your one day off. It is disappointing, indeed. However, just because things don’t go as wished doesn’t mean that all is lost. On the contrary, you can still find gratitude, peace, and joy—even if you didn’t get to swim, visit a friend, stick to your routine, or do what you had planned for.
A Look at My Journey
Like everyone else, I can have a hard time when things don’t go according to plan. Struggling with depression only amplifies that, making me feel sadder and more uneasy—though I’m grateful to be making progress, step by step. 🙂
How a Small Detour Taught Me to Embrace the Unexpected
This morning, a loved one and I went to a neighbouring town for a walk in nature and a matcha latte. I was looking forward to that drink, only to discover later that the café was closed on Tuesdays, and we barely had time to go to another bar before it started pouring! So, no matcha latte and no nature walk. I was disappointed, indeed, and also a bit uncomfortable with how the day was unfolding. However, bit by bit I started to change perspective. I focused on a hot herbal tea to calm me down, and when the rain eased up, I stepped outdoors and just enjoyed inhaling the fresh air and feeling the raindrops on my skin. It was a beautiful moment—one that reminded me that I normally like walking in the rain. 🙂
Embracing the Unwritten
Just because something doesn’t go exactly the way you’d like doesn’t mean everything is lost. It’s completely understandable that you might not feel ok with what just happened to you, or the ordeal which caused you to fall apart, but try to keep an open mind and take into account that you can discover something else that can both cheer you up and inspire you. Not every detail of your life has to be planned—there is beauty in the unexpected, too, even if it can be frightening. When something changes, try to take in what is positive. Even if it was a bad experience, look for the good, no matter how small it might be. It’s okay to feel disoriented, and if you need help handling your emotions, please talk through it with a therapist; you don’t have to feel alone in hard moments. ❤️
Being Less Perfect and More Grateful
As I wrap up this post, I’m reminded of how important it is to try being a little bit less perfect—and to expect life to be a little less perfect, too. Since we can never be completely certain that things will unfold exactly as we wish, being grateful for the present moment is already a huge achievement. Practicing gratitude is crucial, though I still struggle with it, especially when I’m feeling low. I try not to force positive thoughts, but rather to welcome them when they naturally feel real. If plan A doesn’t work out, there is always a plan B waiting for us. 🙂 ❤️
