Bad days are inevitable; we all have them, believe it or not—otherwise we wouldn’t be human. It’s true that bad days are a part of life, but they are frustrating, indeed. It isn’t pleasant waking up in the morning feeling as though you have barely any energy left when the day hasn’t even started yet. Perhaps it’s a day filled with bad vibes: you argued with your best friend or your boss, you woke up more anxious than usual, and accomplishing simple chores seems tougher than ever. Even though we face these uncomfortable, difficult days, we can still do something about them—even if it is just taking a baby step. Above all, acknowledging and accepting the presence of a difficult day is of the utmost importance to navigating it.
You Don’t Have to Do the Impossible
When a difficult day strikes, it’s important to acknowledge that you don’t have to turn things upside down in order to feel better, nor do you have to change who you are just because you don’t like yourself in that moment. I know how difficult it is. Aside from my depression, I experience these kinds of lows as a feeling of not wanting to do anything at all—I feel sadder than ever, while also having a hard time focusing on anything. What about you? We all experience a bad day differently. Whether you become sad, angry, irritated, or frustrated, don’t judge yourself, and don’t suppress your real emotions. Try to accept that you can’t always be at your best. Manage what is manageable for you.
Mindful Approach
Mindfulness isn’t about sitting in pure silence and waiting for the problems to fade away; it’s about acknowledging that you’re going through a rough day without fighting against it, and instead doing your best to shift your focus on something more pleasant.
As I mentioned earlier, acknowledgment and acceptance are key to navigating these kinds of days. Whether you get stuck in a loop of thoughts or can’t stop crying for some reason, try to recognize and accept the difficulties you are having in that moment. Also, remember to take deep breaths in between, and then try to focus your attention on something else; remember it doesn’t have to be grand to be reassuring.
Be Extra Kind to Yourself ❤️
So, learn to be kind to yourself—especially on the hard days. I know it can be incredibly difficult, but there is always time to begin appreciating yourself bit by bit. No matter how long it takes, it’s definitely a journey for many of us. Treat yourself a little extra on days like these. I, for example, go for a nature walk to get some air and movement, and when I’m back, I treat myself to a gelato or a cream tea. 🙂 If you want, keep a journal by your side whenever you feel the need to express your thoughts on paper. Also try to stick to your favourite rituals and practice a little gratitude, too, to help you see things from a brighter perspective.
Final Words
It’s time to conclude this article: hard days will always be there, but what we can do is try to make them a bit lighter and brighter, even if it’s just in small moments or glimpses of joy. It’s okay to get upset when anger or sadness clings to you, and it’s okay to let out your emotions—without letting them take over. ❤️
