Just a few kilometres inland from the coast and a stone’s throw from the French border, you will find Dolceacqua—an enchanting medieval town tucked away in Val Nervia.

I am pleased that I visited this hidden gem last week with my family. While staying in Celle Ligure, we took the opportunity to see more of the Ligurian hinterland, and I’m glad we stopped by Dolceacqua to admire its unique beauty and charm up close.

Curious Facts about Dolceacqua

• While Dolceacqua literally means ‘sweet water’ in Italian, it has nothing to do with the taste of the water. It’s actually a linguistic evolution of Dulcius, a medieval nobleman who governed the area centuries ago.

• The town’s iconic bridge, known as ‘the ancient bridge,’ is an original 15th-century masterpiece, located just beneath the Doria Castle. Today, it serves as a lovely focal point for taking pictures. Moreover, the landmark is closely tied to the memory of the renowned Impressionist artist Monet, often being referred to as ‘Monet’s bridge’. He was so fascinated by its architecture that he painted the bridge and the surrounding landscape three times, describing it as un gioiello di leggerezza—a jewel of lightness.

• The medieval Doria Castle of Dolceacqua, which imperiously crowns the top of the village, was originally built in the 11th century by the counts of Ventimiglia. It later passed to the Doria family—from whom the castle takes its name—who turned it into a fortified residence. Although severely damaged by Austrian forces in the 18th century, it went on to inspire Monet’s famous creations alongside the bridge.

Dolceacqua’s Idyllic Atmosphere

One of the things I loved most about this place was its incredible atmosphere. It was beautiful looking up at the old village from below, with the ancient bridge completing the picturesque scenery. It felt like a bit of a mystery wandering through the shadowy, narrow alleys which lead to the castle. These paths are so enchanting, artistic, charming, and unique in their own ways. As you walk, you can stop by to peer into small local artisan shops, which only adds to the magic. You can also find some restaurants, and cafes in the old part of town.

It’s amazing how this gem is surrounded by lush greenery of the Val Nervia, with its vibrant Mediterranean scrub, olive groves, and vineyards. This natural backdrop makes the place feel even more captivating. In fact, Monet was just as fascinated by the surrounding greenery as he was by the iconic landmarks.

Dolceacqua is a member of I Borghi Più Belli d’Italia (The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy)—an honor that is absolutely deserved! 🙂 A town as charming as this simply cannot be missed!

If you’re looking for an escape in the lovely hinterland of Liguria, make sure to add Dolceacqua to your list! It definitely occupies a strategic position, given its close proximity to the France border and several Ligurian coastal cities. In my experience, it’s a place worth visiting for its history, setting, and its artistic, idyllic vibes! 🙂
