“Deep Breaths. The Heavy Weight of Keeping It Together”

I tell myself, “Deep breaths, Sofy,” whenever I am on edge, crying, or in pain; it’s a reminder to stay present with myself and my surroundings, and a reassurance that it’s okay to slow down and take things step by step—no matter how hard it feels in the moment. It’s exhausting to hold yourself emotionally together while trying to keep your problems contained; it’s definitely a heavy weight to carry. That’s why I like to hold on to those two words: “deep breaths.” They allow me to gently breathe through the chaos when I desperately need a respite.

The Burden You Keep Within

If you’re reading this and also feeling overwhelmed by the emotional weight you keep inside, know that you’re not alone. It’s a profound challenge. It drains you not only mentally but also physically; the tension you build inside, the worries racing through your mind, the suppressed need to cry it out, and early morning awakenings will eventually transform into physical pain.

It’s like having a stone inside you. The stone represents all your struggles, and when they become unbearable, your entire being feels too heavy and too tired to keep going.

The Art of Being Present

Being truly present with yourself does not mean all your problems will be resolved at once; instead, it allows you to take a deep, mindful breath, acknowledging the work that needs to be done without being completely consumed by a sudden wave of intense sadness and pain. Practicing mindfulness in your everyday life takes time, especially if you’re new to it. Even though I am familiar with this practice, I can still get carried away by my struggles. It’s an ongoing process—one where I am always learning something new along the way. ❤️

The Importance of the Breath

The breath plays a central role in mindfulness practice. Whenever you’re stressed or feel like too much is happening at once, a controlled, soothing breath can help restore the calm within you.❤️ It’s a matter of practice and awareness; moreover, it’s an art you cultivate over time.

I always come back to my favourite two words, “deep breaths,” 🙂 because they are reassuring to me—a way of reminding myself that I am more than capable of stopping and focusing fully on the rhythm and length of my inhale and exhale. Whenever I’m pulled away by chaos and sorrow, my breath and mindfulness are the two crucial elements grounding me and giving me a gentle hug of comfort. ❤️

It’s Okay…

When one has been through a lot, the mind can get to a point where it says “That’s enough!” —and that is completely understandable. You have every right to feel confused, out of place due to the many ordeals and life events that have caused you so much stress and pain. It’s okay if you find it hard to keep it together; it’s okay if you need to cry. It’s incredibly challenging and painful to keep going when things feel unbearable. You don’t have to keep it together in order to move on. Take it step by step—even if it is a tiny step, it’s perfectly fine. ❤️

“I focus on the here and now when I inhale and exhale deeply, nothing else”
