Yesterday morning, I made my way to Milan to visit a new exhibition at Palazzo Reale near the Duomo: Dalí e la Moda. It offers a fascinating journey through art and fashion, where imagination, desire, and identity come together harmoniously. The exhibition beautifully explores the connection between the Catalan artist and the fashion world. Dalí himself was widely considered a dandy and a style enthusiast from a young age. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as there were not only paintings to admire, but also jewelry, garments, video clips, photographs, and more!

I am so glad that I went to this exhibition; I had no idea that Dalí was such a fashion enthusiast, nor did I know he had collaborated with prestigious brands and renowned photographers over the years.

Born a Dandy

Salvador Dalí was born into a respectable middle-class family that was observant of contemporary fashion. While other schoolchildren dressed plainly, he, on the other hand, would spend hours in front of the mirror perfecting his appearance—learning early in life the art of standing apart from the crowd. Over time, he transformed his public identity and daily life into a living surrealist masterpiece.

Fashion as the Outer Shell of Dreams

As a Surrealist, he brought boundless creativity to his work, often featuring his beloved wife, Gala, as his muse. Dalí considered fashion the outer shell of a dream and a tool to make the subconscious tangible. Beyond mere utility, garments and objects unchained the body from the mundane rules of everyday life. Dressing became an exercise in theatrical self-expression and Surrealist imagination.

Iconic Partnerships

He soon crossed paths with exclusive fashion houses like Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Rabanne, Gucci, and Emilio Pucci. Designers were so captivated by Dalí’s Surrealist universe that they forged some of the most memorable creative partnerships of the mid-20th-century. Among them, his legendary 1937 collaboration with Italian couturière Elsa Schiaparelli yielded the famous Lobster Dress.

It was fascinating to observe his fashion paintings, where faces are often obscured or featureless—often replaced with flowers—to let the garment take center stage. His artistic vision seamlessly merged surrealist canvasses, iconic magazine covers, collaborative haute couture, and forward-thinking menswear.

Behind the Wardrobe: Gala and Dalí

One of my favourite aspects of the exhibition was seeing surviving garments and accessories belonging to both Gala and Dalí. Gala’s wardrobe featured haute couture and ready-to-wear creations from 20th-century fashion icons like Elsa Schiaparelli and Gabrielle chanel. In contrast, Dalí embraced a far more eclectic aesthetic, displaying striking pieces he famously wore during public appearences and photo shoots.

Dalí’s Living Legacy

I think it’s wonderful that today’s creative directors for major fashion houses still honour Dalí’s artistic vision and creativity by bringing his concepts to the runway. I was particularly captivated, for example, by recent creations from Schiaparelli, which you can see right below.

Boundless Vision

For me, it was truly an honour to attend this exhibition. Not only did I learn more about the artist himself and his passion for art and fashion, but just wandering around provided endless inspiration—soaking in all the details and the beautiful atmosphere did its magic, too! 🙂 If you’re keen to see something different that goes beyond traditional art, I highly recommend visiting this exhibition; you have time until January 31th !
