Trigger warning: if you are grappling with your mental health, this article might be difficult to read. However, it also includes hopeful and motivational insights along the way. The decision to keep reading is entirely yours. ❤️

Living in uncertainty about how things will unfold in the future is not easy at all. Of course, you can take charge of your life and take steps forward and be super excited or curious about your next life chapter—but not everyone has the enthusiasm or the strength to get on with life. There are many reasons behind this lack of motivation: a medical diagnosis, financial problems, or a toxic relationship are just a few examples of how unpredictable and difficult life can become. Because I struggle daily with depression, finding the motivation to move on can frequently feel overwhelming.

The Struggle in Uncertainty

As I mentioned earlier, living without knowing what comes next is undeniably frightening, and it isn’t something you can simply choose to ignore. However, you can get support to help you navigate this fear. When you’re struggling, looking ahead and believing that things will be okay feels almost impossible. The uncertainty of the future sucks you in, leaving you exhausted and without hope. When tomorrow is unclear, your brain naturally treats the unknown as a potential threat keeping your nervous system on high alert.

A Piece of My Journey

I wouldn’t have come up with this topic, if I hadn’t experienced it firsthand. In fact, it is something I have been struggling with over the past few years: the fear of not being able to overcome life’s obstacles—some of which I already know are challenging, indeed, and others I have yet to face. If you’re also going through a tough time, know you’re not alone and that I truly understand how hard it can be. ❤️ I’ve been hospitalized twice and both times were extremely difficult for me. Due to my depression, I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, and moving forward felt utterly impossible.

Mindful Approach

In recent years, I started cultivating mindfulness and acknowledging bit by bit how impactful it is for my mental wellbeing. Sometimes, when things get out of hand, I take it five minutes or one hour at a time; in this way, I feel safer and more tranquil. Focusing on the here and now gives me the space I need to truly breathe and see what comes next. Instead of scrolling on social media first thing in the morning, I dedicate myself to my routine, which gives me the resilience I need to accomplish tasks.

Cultivating Resilience

Resilience isn’t something you’re simply born with; it is built through small steps. It’s about being self-compassionate and honouring every step of your journey. Building resilience can take a great deal of time, especially when you have a lot going on. Respect that, give yourself time, and don’t rush the process. You are already resilient for even trying to battle your demons and moving forward, even if it’s only by taking a tiny step. The future is scary, indeed, but you have the power to try—no matter how many times it takes to succeed.

A Final Note

Uncertainty will always be present in your life, although do not let it dictate how you live. Not knowing how things will unfold is sometimes very hard accept. However, instead of worrying excessively, be mindful of your current situation and focus on your wellbeing in the here and now. The rest will come, and it doesn’t have to be negative—even if that is hard to believe right now. There is a warrior in you, no matter what. ❤️
